One of the biggest breakthroughs in how we understand is systems theory and systems thinking. To understand how systems thinking is used in our business, we first must understand what a system is and how they can work for you.

Simply put, a system is an organized collection of parts (or subsystems) that are highly integrated to accomplish an overall business goal. The system has various parts:

  • a number of inputs that come into you,
  • which you allow to  go through certain processes in your business environment and
  • you than allow it to produce certain outputs or results you desire.

Overall the inputs, how you process them and what you produce are the piece parts of the system. If one part of the system is changed, the nature of the overall system is often changed.

Systems Thinking for You

I am a proponent that all business solutions be holistic, automated and repurposed and systems thiking meets these objectives.

  • Holistic – You have an end to end process that encompasses all the piece parts to get the jonb done. That’s holistic.
  • Automated – Then you make it as automated as possible and reduce your manual labor as much as possible.
  • Repurposed – Once it works you can rise and repeat over and over again. Even better is find a system that works and implement it in to your business. Tweak it and make it work for you over and over again.

Systems Thinking means that when all the piece parts are tied together, they accomplish the overall desired goals of your business using the system.

Systems Thinking is Holistic Thinking

.

So a system is usually made up of many smaller systems, or subsystems.  For example, an organization or your business is made up of many administrative, managerial, products, services, groups, you, vendor and individuals.

Systems range from simple to complex. There are numerous types of systems. A high-functioning system continually exchanges feedback among its various parts to ensure that they remain closely aligned and focused on achieving the goal of the system. If any of the parts or activities in the system seems weakened or misaligned, the system makes necessary adjustments to more effectively achieve its goals.

A pile of sand is not a system. If you remove a sand particle, you have still got a pile of sand. However, a functioning car is a system. Remove the carburetor and you no longer have a working car.
