Creating a Successful Website for Your Consulting Business

When you’re an Internet marketing consultant, creating a successful website for your consulting business is imperative. All good websites contain some common design characteristics, such as ease of use, cohesiveness and consistency. But an offline consultant’s site should also include some specific aspects.

As an offline consultant, your job is to sell your personal skills, individual talents, marketing solutions and online experience rather than physical products. Solid, hype-free website copy that outlines specific services and answers specific questions is a good place to start.

In addition, a clean site with minimal distractions, clear navigation and quick-loading pages is important. Working to attract visitors to your site through whatever methods you use (blogs, PPC, AdWords, offline advertising, etc.) and then losing them the minute they arrive because of slow-loading pages or irritating animations is self-defeating. Instead, work to create an attractive, appealing design that presents a professional image and encourages confidence in both you and your abilities.

Focus your content on your client’s needs rather than your own. Remember What’s In It For Me? (WIIFM) and you’ll go far in creating a site to draw—and keep—targeted visitors. What is your client looking for? How did she come to visit your site? What search words did she use? What are her individual needs? What does she want you to do for her? Knowing the answer to these and similar questions, then providing the answers in your website content, will almost guarantee a greater measure of success for your site.

While your content should be focused on your client or prospect, letting your personality show through is a big plus. Let your visitors get a feel for who you are… not just on your About page either! Use your own “voice” when writing the copy—or having it written. Ensure that what your visitors read sounds as if you were speaking to them.

If you speak in contractions, include contractions in your content rather than using “proper” English. If you have a southern drawl and say “ya’ll” don’t use northern idioms such as “you guys.” If you laugh and joke around a lot, your content should be light and fun, not heavy, dull and dry. Let the content on your website clearly portray your personality. It will help your prospective clients better decide if you’re the person they want to do business with and eliminate a lot of wasted time.

You could spend a fortune on creating a successful website for your consulting business, but the money spent isn’t the issue. Quality content that clearly speaks to your client and his needs, along with a sense of who you are and what you can offer is a better goal for which to aim when designing your offline consultant’s site.

Writing the perfect sales pitch for your personality and style of communication will make the process of selling much more comfortable. Here are some tips for crafting a successful pitch.

First, realize that the goal of a pitch is not a sale – you’re hoping for the opportunity to meet with your prospect and provide them an overview of your services. You are not trying to close the deal with a sales letter or initial phone call! Reduce your expectations, and you’ll feel a lot less pressure.

Remember that you’re creating a relationship. Think about what you can do to be helpful to your prospect. You want to turn them into a contact, not into a customer right off the bat. Take it slowly.

Begin your pitch with a solid, attention-getting, opening statement. Let your specific audience know you are writing directly to them. You’re trying to make them want to know more about you and your business. Be creative – write something that your audience can’t ignore. Consider what you would want to hear if you were in your prospect’s shoes and write your opening for them.

Back up your statements with an anecdote. Include an example from your business. For instance, if you want your prospect to know that you can help her build a solid PPC campaign, give her the results from one you built for yourself or another client. Avoid jargon that might turn off your audience. Focus on the results, not on the process. As they say in the advertising business, sell the sizzle, not the steak!

Use statistics sparingly. While they serve to back up your statements, numbers can cause a prospect’s eyes to glaze over quickly. Focus more on human interest stories and personalized data to convince your audience that what you say is true.

Be sure to keep your sales pitch short. A long, drawn-out pitch will at best bore your listeners, and at worse, irritate them. If you want them to hear all you have to say, don’t say more than you need to. A short, interesting sales pitch offers you a much better chance of being heard from start to finish.

Include a response-getting closing statement. Invite your prospect to take action: Sign up for a drug prices celexa seminar. Ask for a free report. Allow you to come in for a presentation. Whatever it is you want your prospect to do, ask them to do it! Don’t assume they’ll respond the way you want unless you ask.

Grammatical errors and typos have a way of sneaking past even the most ardent proofreader, so proofread your sales pitch several times. Lay it aside for a couple of hours, then come back to it and proofread it again. It must be as error-free as you can make it for good results.

Remember that your sales pitch should provide the information your prospective client will need to make a decision to create a relationship with you. While you don’t want to tell them everything you know, it will help to give them enough information that they believe you can help them. You want them to feel only you can truly meet their need for Internet marketing assistance.

Business cards are a must when marketing offline. While you may think these little goodies are old hat, think again. They provide a quick, simple way to leave your complete contact information with a prospect. Small yard signs are another means for reaching local clients for your consulting business. A simple message such as “Need More Customers? In addition, you’ll develop a reputation as a specialist in a particular industry or field, and that in itself will attract more clients.

As an offline consultant offering Internet marketing advice and services, your clients will typically be small business owners. They will have a brick and mortar shop located within 50 miles or so of your location. They may have a website but it won’t be making them money—or at least not enough money. And they could potentially not even be online at all. Ideally, your target client will be someone who understands the value and the need for doing business online, but who doesn’t have the Internet marketing skill, knowledge or resources they need themselves.

While your clients may vary, these criteria will give you a fairly clear image of who you’ll be targeting with your ads and promotion. Then you can narrow in as needed for your own business. For instance, you may decide to focus on a more narrow niche such as day cares, or clothing stores.

Once you understand who your target audience is, you can determine where to find them. Some of your prospective clients may hang out online in various forums or discussion groups. If so, they’ll be looking for small business advice and information, website design ideas, and possibly even sales and Internet marketing strategies. The majority of your clients—and your promotion, however—will be offline. And you’ll do best by focusing your marketing efforts locally.

Networking groups such as Business Networking International (BNI), your local Chamber of Commerce, or even business classes such as those offered by the Small Business Administration are good places to meet prospective consulting clients. Don’t overlook the businesses you frequent, or those owned and managed by friends and family members.

Grab your local phonebook and see what kind of businesses are listed. Search online for the companies you find. Do they have a website? How well is it put together? Do they have a Facebook page, a Twitter profile, a LinkedIn account? Make notes on ways you can help them improve and refer broadly to your findings when you call on them or send them your marketing materials.

You can also search for local businesses online. Enter the type of business (such as “day care”) along with the city. Or visit YellowPages.com and search by business category. You’ll get the name, phone number and address for any business that has a business telephone.

Knowing who your target client is will help you determine how best  to locate clients for your offline consulting business. Once you understand who you’re after, it’s simply a matter of knowing where they hang out—online or offline—and doing some research to find their contact information so you can call them or mail them a brochure, sales letter, or both.
