If after all the checks to get rid of computer virus fails and you are convinced that your computer has a virus, you will certainly need to do something about getting rid of your computer virus. What you do will depend on how tech-savvy you are. If you know almost nothing about installing software or looking through all those tools on the computer, then the best thing to do is call in someone who does know.

Who Should Get Rid of the Computer Virus

Whether this person is the next-door neighbor or one of the family, or whether he will be a trained technician, only you can decide. The first two you’ll probably get for free – or the offer of a meal or favorite cake. But be sure they do actually know what they are doing before you let them mess with your PC. You don’t want things to be made worse. Some young people today know quite a bit about computers.

The last option you’ll have to pay for, but it will be worth it to get your PC up and running again. And at least you’ll have a better chance of it being done properly – and if they do something wrong, or the problem is not resolved, they’ll usually come back and fix it for free.

If it does, and you have enough knowledge to fix things yourself, you can go online and access a free virus scan. If it won’t do anything, then the best thing to do is call that computer technician in, pronto.

Of course, if your computer has all the anti-virus software installed and updated and set to scan your computer every time you start it, then you don’t have too much to worry about. Any virus that comes knocking on your door will usually get nabbed immediately and thrown into jail. So you won’t have to do anything. Many experts recommend Symantec/Norton anti-virus software. If you are a Univesity student you may be able to get it for free.

Most universities have an IT Security Office and web instructions on what security you should install on your computer. Since they are the experts, it would be wise to follow their advice.

Sometimes You Just Don’t Know If It Is  a ComputerVirus

Many of the symptoms of virus infection can also be caused by software or hardware problems that have nothing to do with a virus. Things such as slowing down for program start-ups, freezing, deletion of files or folders, erratic functions and flashing light on the modem may not be caused by a virus at all. So if these things trouble you and you have good anti-virus software already installed, you should look elsewhere for the problem.

What are Cookies and How Can They Endanger Your PC

A Cookie is basically a message about your Internet activity.

When you visit a website, the server passes this small item of information along to your web browser. It is stored on your computer and when you go to another page, it is passed back again.

People who have websites can gather the information they need from using cookies. They can find out which pages get the most hits and which pages get repeat hits. This enables them to conduct their business more successfully. Cookies also store information you have provided to the website. For instance if you’ve done some online shopping your information is stored in a cookie and passed back to that website the next time you visit. This saves you from having to enter the same information over and over.

The only website that can read a cookie is the one that created it in the first place. The only information that can be in a cookie is what you provide, so if you choose to shop online, then that information will be stored in a cookie. If you don’t shop online, but have your personal information stored elsewhere on your computer, no cookie can access that information. A server can only read the specific information in the cookie, not anything else on your computer.

Cookies do not contain executable code, so cannot contain a virus.

If you are thinking that you don’t like any website to track your movements through the use of cookies, then they have always been able to track movements of the people who visit, but using a cookie makes it easier.

You need to enable cookies if you want to shop online or even browse easily. If cookies are disabled, many website features such as shopping carts, don’t work. While some anti-spyware products can and do detect cookies, they are not spyware, nor can they be used for any virus or malware. They are not computer program either, but simply pieces of data.

Cookies can be stolen, poisoned or hi-jacked and changed by a malicious third party if the secure https is not used. In some cases what happens is that the total $ amount on a shopping basket may be changed to a smaller amount, thus depriving the website of its profit. While you may think that personal details may also be stolen, this is not usually the case because most of the personal information is stored on the server rather than in the cookie.

How to Control and Delete Cookies

While cookies don’t generally represent a threat to you, anyone who accesses your system can view your cookies and find out where you’ve been. If you sell your computer to anyone, the same thing applies. Third party cookies – those that are put on your computer by the banner ads on the pages you’ve visited can also be a nuisance and represent a slightly greater threat than other cookies.

For all these reasons, you may want to either disallow cookies from your computer, or control which cookies you do allow. You may find it easier to simply delete all the cookies at regular intervals. All these things can be done simply and easily from your computer. All systems give you an easy way to manage or delete all the cookies, whether third party or not.
Deleting cookies is the easiest thing to do in Internet Explorer. Simply click on Tools>Internet Options and click on Delete Cookies. Click on OK when the box comes up asking if you want to delete all Cookies. To prevent third party cookies set your slider in the privacy section to medium high.
If you click on ‘delete all cookies’ then even those you’ve allowed will be deleted. If you want to delete only specific cookies than you need to double click on each one and then click delete.

How do you find your cookies?

To find the names of these cookies, click on Tools>Internet Options, click on the General tab then look for the Temporary Internet Files area. Click Setting and then View Files. To view the cookies, click on “Name” and scroll until you find the names that start with “Cookie”.  Double click on the ones you want to delete and click on delete. Close the window when you’ve finished.

In Firefox, click on Tools>Internet Options>Privacy and Cookies. If you want to block only third party cookies look for “for originating site only” and check the box next to it. To allow or block certain other cookies you need to click on Exceptions. You need to enter the website addresses here, so you must have specific websites in mind – and know their URLs – to allow or block them. Check the appropriate box – e.g. block or allow, then click on Close.

To delete specific cookies you need to find them first and to do this, go to the Privacy tab (as above) and click on View Cookies. Select the ones you want deleted and click on Remove Cookie.

Opera is similar, but you can check the box against the wording “Delete new cookies when exiting” to prevent cookie build-up and tracking.

Can You Tell if Your Computer is Infected?

There are a couple of ways in which you can tell if your computer has a virus. For a start, it will go much more slowly than usual and will seem ‘sticky’ when you go to perform a task. Being slow need not mean a virus. Other things cause slow speed; not enough memory or maybe your hard disk needs defragmenting. Or you could have spyware or adware rather than a virus.

Is your computer suddenly behaving erratically? Do odd messages suddenly appear on the screen? Maybe programs suddenly start up or close down without your permission. Or Windows might suddenly shut down for no apparent reason. All these are symptoms of a virus.

Another virus symptom is if you can hear your hard drive or modem working overtime. Or if the activity light on the modem or broadband is constantly lit, it could be a sign of a virus because virus emails are constantly replicating themselves. Watch the date/time stamps of your files because if a virus infects them, it mostly doesn’t restore the original time or date, but you’ll see the time and date of the infection. They may also appear bigger than you remember.

If your PC uploads files from the Internet without your approval, you should become very suspicious of a virus. If your Windows Registry Editor or your anti-virus programs don’t load, generic for avalide you can be almost sure of a virus. But only almost, since they can play up due to other problems.

If you try to view a file or folder and see only garbage, you can suspect a virus. A virus will destroy directory structure to make room to replicate itself. On your computer you will have File allocation Tables (FAT) that manage the data on computer disks. Data loss can happen if a virus attacks the FAT, which they are mostly designed to do.

Don’t have a panic attack if you get an email warning you of an alarming virus. Many of these so-called warnings are hoaxes. To check on whether it is a hoax, first go to Computer Virus Myths or F-Secure Hoax Warnings. To find out if there are any viruses currently circulating go to Symantec Anti-Virus Research Center or Network Associates Virus Library.

Never run a computer without having a firewall and anti-virus protection installed. You can get many good programs for free, so having protection doesn’t mean you need to pay heaps for peace of mind. But don’t just get any old firewall; choose a name that is reliable. Good virus software will remove any virus and clean your computer up as well.
