When a site visitor performs the call to action, you have a conversion. The number of conversions divided by the number of Website visitors is the conversion rate.

One of the goals of the Website should be to increase the conversion rate.

Testing

Once you have your measurable elements, traffic and conversions, you can test various ways to make your Website work. You can test various techniques for increasing traffic. Options here include search engine optimization of your Website, pay per click advertising, press releases and article writing.

Then you will also want to increase your conversion rates. Split testing is used to determine how various elements within the web page affect the visitor. You can change the elements on the page such as the headline or color of text and graphics, to measure the affect on the visitor.

Seven Steps for Designing New Webpages

Are you getting ready to start a new web project? Or are you planning to create new pages for your current website? If so this article is for you. Here are seven quick steps to help you get started on the right foot.

The first thing you will want to do if you are starting a new website is decide what you want to your site to do and then construct a blueprint. OK. Is your blueprint ready! Great! Let’s get this show on the road.

STEP ONE – Create A Template For Your Website
The very first thing you want to do is establish the look and feel of your site so you can keep it consistent on all the webpages. Just imagine the headache of building 30 pages of content and then remembering something you should have included in your design or realizing that the look and feel just doesn’t fit the theme of your site. Ouch!

So, save yourself that headache and look at a few websites that are similar to what you want to do. You could even visit websites that offer ready-made-templates for you to use like http://www.freewebtemplates.com/ or http://freesitetemplates.com/

STEP TWO – Outline The Items That Will Change On Each Page
Go through your webpage template and make note of the things that will change on each page. You will use this as your building checklist.

STEP THREE – Create Your Storyboard
Take your ideas from the previous step and create your storyboard in a text editor. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Filename: Write the name you intend to give this file ( e.g., my-first-page.html) The best thing you can do here is to give it the same name as the keyword you are targeting for this particular page.

Title: This is what will appear at the very top of your visitor’s browser. This should be between 60 to 80 characters long. Do not forget to weave your main keyword into the title at least once.

Keywords: These are the keywords that will appear in your meta-tag description. Type your main keyword first and then add in about four more similar keywords or phrases. Try to keep this under a hundred characters.

Description: Type a description of what this page is about in way that will grab a potential visitor’s attention. Keep this about 150 characters long. Do not forget to weave in your keyword here.

Body: This is where you will actually type the content for this particular page. Try to weave your keyword in naturally once every couple of paragraphs if possible. Add links to the web pages you want you visitors to see. Decide where your graphics will go as well as any ads you will place on your page to make money.

Wrap-up: This is where you put your call to action for whatever you want your visitor to do…whether that be to click on your affiliate link…buy your product…or sign up for your e-zine. Do not forget to add a link back to your home page.

STEP FOUR – Create Your New Page
Now that you know what your page will look like and what is going to be on it…go ahead and open your favorite HTML editor. Open your template for this site as well as the document you just created in the previous step.

STEP FIVE – Copy And Paste
All you have to do now is simply copy the text you created in your storyboard and paste it into your webpage template. Once you are done and are satisfied with how it looks you are ready for…

Does Your Business Need a Website – Who Should Design It?

Anyone in the business world knows that when someone asks, “What’s your website address?” you better have a URL to give them. They don’t want to hear “I don’t have one yet” or “I’m working on it”. Having an established, professional looking website, always scores credibility points for the business owner.

Of utmost importance though…it is far better to not have a website than to have a nonprofessional, cheesy looking site. You will do much more damage to your business by portraying your company in a less than top-notch light.

If you don’t have the knowledge, skills or abilities to produce an outstanding design yourself then hire a professional web designer. Web designers aren’t cheap, but that’s no reason to cut corners. Rework your budget or possibly try to barter for all or part of the work to build your website.

You can save yourself time and money if you have your website copy written. Provide your web designer with the text and the layout of how you want it to look. Offer color schemes. Send links to other sites that you admire. Of course, you never want to copy someone else’s site, but by giving your designer an idea for the theme you’d like to have, the process will go much more quickly.

The more work you can you do up front yourself, the easier it will be on your pocket book. Many designers work by the hour. If you want to have lots of links in your website, spell that out clearly. Ask your designer if you should submit your text and ideas in a Word document or if they would prefer it some other way. And make sure to forward any photos you want to use to your web designer. Web designers are not mind readers. Most will do as many edits as you like, however you will be charged for each edit.

There are many “quick and easy” web design companies out there, advertising that you can have your website up in an hour. And there are many canned templates that you can use which are very user friendly. But, keep in-mind that most of these tools are for beginners. They will not provide a professional looking site. If it’s your business, the one you’re trying to make profitable, image is everything. Don’t try to cut corners in this area.

Blogs, derived from the words “web log” were originally thought of as simply online diaries a place for people to record their thoughts and inspirations. But then Google came along and started to recognize the unique and original content that these trite little sites presented and the rules of the game suddenly changed. Scenario Two:

The same business owner as above also creates a blog to supplement their company website. Now, instead of focusing on simply one set of tightly selected keywords, the blog itself remains a broad overview of the gardening niche, while each individual post reflects a drilled down topic within that same niche.

So when the business owner writes a blog post about the benefits of “organic vegetable gardening in backyard containers,” this individual post becomes a keyword rich, targeted wonder and when indexed by the search engines has a far greater opportunity to bringing highly targeted traffic to the blog based upon that single post.

Through time, the blog expands with many similar posts that are targeted to sub niches within the broader gardening niche and can even be categorized from inside the blog structure itself. What has now been created in Google’s eyes is an extremely dynamic, naturally evolving site that is content rich and niche specific.

When properly constructed and promoted, each time the business owner posts to the blog, that individual post can get indexed in anywhere from two to twenty four hours on average. This opportunity is far greater than any options available at the static website.

Additionally, when the business owner endeavors to have a visitor signup for a newsletter, further segmenting can occur and subscriber lists can be refined and targeted. And because the blog is the front-end showcase to the original website, each blog post has the opportunity to link back to specific and relevant products at the main site.

When properly structured, blogs are the biggest SEO asset to a website that currently exists. The wise business owner will recognize these benefits and when implemented, will enjoy many opportunities that do not currently exist with traditional websites alone.

Having other people link to your site also increases your chances of being indexed higher in the search engine listings.

Try to be committed to your website. Keep the content and photos etc. up-to-date. The internet is known for having a lot of “dead” information – content that is never updated for years and years; in fact, the website owner has abandoned the site but never taken it off the air. People enjoy and deserve fresh content.

If you want to be reached, add a link to your email address. Make sure it’s an address that’s not your main source of email. Find a free email account like Hotmail, or Yahoo etc. This is because there is a tendency for people to sometimes abuse your address and spam you with lots of unwanted mail. If you get that, you can always just start another free email account and change the link on your site.

Even if you don’t want to design and maintain your own site, an even easier way for you to get your opinion, or your recipes, or any type of information out is to start a blog, which is short for web log.

There are many free blogging hosts on the Internet for you to use and using them is as simple as typing your letter or information for that day, and clicking on the publish button. Your information is instantly transferred to your blog site for anyone to read. Easy as that!

Clean and Simple Web Design Secrets

We live in a technologically-exciting world. Even brand new webmasters today can make use of easy to master web design tools that add functionality only a web programmer could have dreamed of just a couple of years ago.

And that is great, right? Wrong! Quite the opposite is true.

The accessibility of such web mastering tools has resulted in hundreds of “junk” websites that have so much going on at every page that the web surfer is completely overwhelmed.

So, what is the answer? Most successful webmasters today–that is webmasters who have visitors coming back over and over to their site and who are making money and/or getting some other desired response–will tell you that the answer is clean and simple web design. Usability is the key.

Great website designs focus on 3 basic values: simplicity, clarity, and speed. In other words, you need a site that is visually appealing, but at the same time downloads quickly and is easy to navigate.

To design a site that has visual appeal, you can make use of simple graphics, color, and graphical text. At all costs, stay away from flashing animations and busy backgrounds. In fact, a white, cream, or light yellow background with black or dark blue text is best, if you want the majority of visitors to be able to read your text easily.

It isn’t necessary to be an accomplished graphic artist to design a visually pleasing content site. Grab a photo or two from a free stock photo site such as www.sxc.hu, add some colored text and a tagline using a graphics program like Windows Paint or Paint Shop Pro, and that’s all that is needed for a header.

Navigation should be simple text links or buttons, either across the top, right under the header, or down the left or right side of the screen. Make sure the text labels clearly indicate what the user will find when he or she clicks on them.

An optin form and one or two simple ads can also be placed in the left or right panes, with your content in the main center panel. Your content pane should be the largest area on the screen, so that it draws the reader’s focus.

Clean and simple web design extends to the layout of your content too. Text is most readable when it is in “chunks.” This means short sentences and paragraphs of no more than 2 to 4 sentences each. Make liberal use of colored subheadings and bullets. Sprinkle a graphic or two per page to break up the text and add visual interest. Use margins (padding) around your text, so that it doesn’t bump up against the edges of your navigation and ad panels. Lots of white space is crucial.

In summary, many beginning webmasters (and even some more experienced ones!) think that squeezing as much functionality into every page as possible is the right approach. It is not. What will keep people on your site and keep them coming back as well, is a clean, simple, easy to navigate design.

Definition of Web 2.0

There are as many definitions of Web 2.0 as there are people trying to define the term, and looking for a definition can only lead to confusion. O’Reilly Media is an American media company that has been publishing books on web development since the time that there were only a few hundred websites on the Internet. In 2003, during a brainstorming session between the founders of the company, Tim O’Reilly and Dale Dougherty, the term Web 2.0 was coined.

For a detailed technical “definition” of Web 2.0, a visit to Tim O’Reilly’s blog is in order, but after reading the essay, a majority of Internet users will still be scratching their heads in confusion. Fortunately, O’Reilly has taken the 5 page essay and broken it down into one long sentence.

As stated by O’Reilly, “Web 2.0 is the network as platform, spanning all connected devices; Web 2.0 applications are those that make the most of the intrinsic advantage of that platform; delivering software as a continually-updated service that gets better the more people use it, consuming and remixing data from multiple sources, including individual users, while providing their own data and services in a form that allows remixing by others, creating network effects through an “architecture of participation,” and going beyond the page metaphor of Web 1.0 to deliver rich user experiences.” (http://radar.oreilly.com/2005/10/web-20-compact-definition.html)

The evolution of computing from the early days of DOS is nothing short of amazing, and Web 2.0 is just another step to make the Internet, friendlier, more interactive and more fun. The trend from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 can be likened to a football game. In Web 1.0 we were the spectators, and with Web 2.0 we are the team in the middle of a skirmish.

So what’s so different about Web 2.0? For starters, it just looks different. Bright colors on white backgrounds are predominant. Rounded fonts and an easy to read format are the norm. Times New Roman fonts have been replaced with fonts such as Arial Rounded and Tahoma. Use of CSS (cascading style sheets) allows web developers to easily keep web pages less cumbersome and code intensive.

Web 2.0′s functionality has changed too. Interaction between the website and the website user is now possible. This has spawned websites such as MySpace, FaceBook and Twitter which have revolutionized social networking. Millions of people are interaction with each other, sharing their thoughts, ideas, information, expertise, and ranting and ravings to anyone who will listen.
Social networking goes hand-in-hand with social bookmarking which allows users to share their favorite websites with others. Yahoo’s Answers provides web users with an avenue to post questions on virtually any topic and the community answers these questions, earning points for every question provided.

Blogging has become synonymous with Web 2.0. No different from the traditional diary, bogging allows individuals to write about anything they wish; only now it’s on the Internet. Blogs can be shared or kept private.

Information exchange is a big part of Web 2.0. Article writing has become very popular, allowing webmasters to find quality content for their websites, or the general public to find information on virtually every subject imaginable.

Sites like YouTube and Flickr have pushed video and picture sharing to new levels, with lively interaction between the person who made the posting and the people viewing the posts.

This information is simplified and is only the tip of the iceberg. As more and more sites convert to the new format, new uses for the Internet will not doubt be spawned. It’s an exciting time and it will be interesting to see what Web 3.0 will bring.

When Is a Free Website Not A Free Website ?

I constantly get asked can I get a website for free and the answer is a resounding yes, if you do it yourself.And this is all true, if you accept the template given, if you have few customizations a if you do it yourself.However, most folks hearing stops at the yes response and they ask me to do it and I am not sure why you need web development guy to build it for free. Is this an oxymoron statement or what?

So my nice statement is I have a feeling you don’t see what”s all involved once you decide not to do it yourself on a free site and you want something that truly reflects and brands your business for you.

“Free” Website Development Activities?

So my next statement is let’s walk through, the top dozen activities involved in a website development effort.

  1. Domain Name Selection - $8.95 Each domain – to get started. You Need at least 2 to Start – Your Business and your Personal Name.
  2. Hosting Web space - $100.00 Annual approx. The Webhosting server or space to hold the domain and the website
  3. The Website Application - $500 – $200.00 Plus. The Initial basic, not fancy website would put up runs the lower range.
  4. Website Software Configuration - $500-$1000 The configuration and development of the software along with changes and updates between us take a week or more in simple development.
  5. Business Specific Changes - $500-$1000.00 True customization to your business, i.e. special colors , logos, navigation, specific layout would be another cost that can runs to $5k or $10k or more.
  6. Image / Graphics Design Development - $500- $1000 and more. Pictures require finding someone to take the time to too take pictures, select the right ones, resize for the web and all or designing and settling on a graphic for banners and logos can be a few thousand or more.
  7. Payment Buttons and Shopping Carts - $200 – $300 For Revenue we set up a payment process to help folks select and pay for purchases has to be tested also -
  8. Web and Sales Copy Development - $200.00 – $10,000. Taking the time to strategize, write up product, owner and customer focused descriptions is absolutely critical. Then add them in to the site and modify then and make sure the layout is correct, etc to fit the selected theme with pictures is another task that takes lots of time. Then installed, create and verify hyperlinks, payment buttons, etc. testing links is another set of tasks required. .
  9. Email Management – $150 PLUS. – Well this is another critical piece since the whole purpose of the website is customer communication. So email setup and ongoing training on access and use and ongoing management daily is required.
  10. Internet Website Marketing - $250.00 to $5000.00 – The website needs to be marketed and hence strategies and technical tools to help market the site are mandatory. In a static, html or free site this does not exist and must all be done manually. In our blogsites we incorporate automated marketing solutions.
  11. Education and Hands-on – $250 for the first 2 months. Here we cover website/Email/Marketing Usage Training - New website owners usually have no idea how to all the above is done. So after the initial euphoria of thee new site wears off , you need to make changes and updates to the site, you may change directions and use it differently, so training is usually a big factored and this is when the phone calling is at the highest point.
  12. Annual Maintenance & Phone Support. $500 to $1000.00 annual costs. Things always break, emails stop working, website network no access, customer’s complains about access, payment process stops working and requires immediate attention, etc. sometimes it’s a real problem, other times who knows. But this must handled everyday once the website is up and operating. The phone calls have to be handled when they come so support is available. .

This is usually broken down in to get started costs of $500 to $2500.00 and maintenance of $1000.

So we are seeing $3,170.00 plus on the low side if you do everything. And yes we have discounts but why am I being asked for a free website?

- well too many people waste their getting started time with a pretty fancy free website that does nothing for them except look pretty. So I say get something that attracts followers or builds traffic that you can use when ready. Don’t use the free blog site etc and then have nothing when they shut you down one day for no reason. Believe me free WordPress.com shuts you down for marketing and no way do you fix it. Make sure your list of followers move with you.

Those tasks 1 through 12 are the basics and there is even more even in the simplest of websites. This is not a plug and play operation even though some folks talk that about their website development business that way.
