With all the changes in SEO propriety recently, you may have to wonder about link swaps. Are they worth their time to code them? Do link swaps still add value to a website? Will your site be penalized if you have a link to a site that also has a link to yours? What do the experts say about this important topic?

Some SEO experts say that Google and the other search engines are moving value away from link swaps. And in a way, that’s not a totally bad thing. Sites that use irrelevant link swapping just to rank higher in the search engines should be discounted in their ranking.

But there are worthwhile link swaps to consider. As one writer said, someone who links to their local Chamber of Commerce, for instance, and then becomes a member of the Chamber and receives a link from them should not be penalized because they now have a “link swap.” It’s a fine line in the world of search engine optimization.

One-way links are still more valuable to your SEO efforts, however. And there are plenty of ways to get them, such as submitting articles to other websites, posting in discussion forums, commenting on blogs, publishing a blog, submitting guest blog posts and more.

If you decide to seek out a few link swaps for your site, keep these tips in mind for the best results:

Should You Pay for Links for Your Site?

One strategy to build links to your site is to purchase them.  There are several things to consider before doing this.  One of the most important considerations is how the search engines look at such depakote prescription links. When you read Google’s Webmaster Tools section, you’ll find that Google lists paid links on its Link Schemes page. And the last thing you want when trying to build links to your website is to be considered a “schemer” by Google.

Does that stop everyone from doing it? Of course not.

If you want to be legalistic about it, you could call paying for an online ad buying a link to your site. But the intention is different. Buying advertising—whether text block ads, banner ads, or even in-text ads—is an open practice. Visitors see the link and know right away it’s an ad. They can click on it or not, depending on whether they’re interested in buying what you’re offering for sale. There’s nothing subversive about it.

What Google and the other search engines frown upon is paying for what looks to be a legitimate review or legitimate article, when in fact the writer was paid to write a glowing discourse about the product or company. Paying for such reviews or articles, may build more links for your site, but at the risk of ticking off the guys at Google, is it really worth the money?

According to Google, and they’re the experts in the field, the best way to get legitimate links from other websites is to offer unique, quality content that is relevant to your subject and that will gain popularity within the Internet community encouraging others to link to it.

Obviously, the more quality content you offer, the more likely others will be to find your content valuable and provide a link to it. That’s the number one way to get backlinks for your site.

Paying for links is a common practice, whether frowned upon or not, especially where blog posts are concerned. There are any number of companies and websites that offer blogging for pay jobs—which sound great for the bloggers, but if a blogger is getting paid to write about your site… you’re paying for that link.  Should you pay for links for your site? Only you can decide. But if you do, be forewarned that it could potentially get you banned from Google for taking part in a link scheme. Do you think it’s worth the money?

What is a Backlink?

A backlink is essentially a link to your site from another website or internet location.  If you are a blogger and you include links to relevant sites and resources, then you are giving that source a backlink.  Backlinks are important because they are part of the alogarithm that Google uses to rank your website.  Building backlinks should be part of your overall blogging, website marketing, affiliate development program and search engine optimization strategy.

Not all backlinks are created equally.

Search engines value quality backlinks and therefore it is important to be aware of the most effective types of backlinks and which ones are frowned upon by the various search engines.

Link farms, link swaps and purchasing links are all areas that you want to avoid. However, if you decide to employ them, be very cautious. The single best way to increase your backlinks is to offer great content.  When you offer your readers well written, relevant and interesting content, they will want to link to your site and in doing so expose you to more and more readers.  Focus your efforts on offering your readers a site they value and read regularly. It will prove to be the most effective strategy for building links to your site.
